Foundation of Identity in Christ - Part 1

Your true identity is not fragile, not earned through performance, and not up for vote by culture—or even by well-meaning people. It is woven into your very being and grounded in the eternal truth of God. Understanding your identity in Christ is one of the first steps to finding freedom.

The first pillar of understanding our God-given identity is this: you are created in God’s image. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in his own image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This means you reflect God’s heart—His creativity, love, strength, and beauty. The ability to nurture, comfort, persevere, and love all flow from Him. No woman is “less than,” no matter your age, stage of life, or circumstance. As Galatians 3:28 reminds us, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Take a moment to imagine fully embracing your God-given value today. Though sin has distorted God’s design, through Jesus, we are restored to reflect His image in powerful ways.

Being made in God’s image also reveals God’s triune nature in us. The Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—are three distinct Persons, yet perfectly united. Similarly, we are created with spirit, soul, and body, designed to operate in harmony. Our spirit connects us to God, allowing us to receive from Him and worship Him in truth (John 4:24).

Pause and reflect: when was the last time your spirit truly connected with God?

Our soul—our mind, will, and emotions—is the control center of our identity. It is where thoughts, feelings, and choices take root. Lies about our worth may try to grow here, but God’s truth has the power to renew and transform us.

Consider your own soul: are the beliefs you hold about yourself God’s truth, or someone else’s story?

Our body, the visible expression of our inner life, acts out the choices of our spirit and soul. When spirit, soul, and body align with God’s truth, our lives reflect His image in every action and decision.

Sin disrupted this harmony. When Adam and Eve fell, their spirit was separated from God, their soul enslaved to fear and shame, and their body subject to pain and mortality. Identity shifted from reflecting God to being self-focused and performance-driven. But the hope for believers is powerful: through Jesus, our spirit is reconciled to God, our soul is renewed in truth, and our body is empowered as a temple of the Holy Spirit. Worth and purpose are now inherent, not earned.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 encourages us: “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless…” Understanding this, our spirit receives God’s truth and ignites renewal; our soul is transformed by the renewing of the mind; and our body expresses the life within through love, creativity, and obedience.

Take a moment to ask yourself: which areas of your soul need God’s restoration today?

This 4 part blog will help with peeling back the layers of our souls to confront what keeps us stuck. God desires to renew your mind, heal your emotions, align your will, and transform you from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Your identity is not something you earn—it is God-given, unshakable, and waiting for you to walk fully in it.
